We are asking for your help, and we have a lot to give in return.

We’re a small and incredibly hardworking team. While our staff get paid a very modest honorarium, the vast majority of the work we do is voluntary. We are non-profit and collectively put hundreds of hours of work into every issue we publish. This includes everything from soliciting contributions and reading submissions, to editing and proofreading, sending free feedback on domestic fiction submissions, running regular competitions, social media promotion, and offering special opportunities like the Matariki Short Short Story Celebration and the Fiction Readers’ Issue. We also do all those essential background tasks, like keeping our website updated, laying out each new issue, ensuring we have a beautiful cover, paying our valued contributors fairly for their mahi, recruiting new staff and running the Takahē Collective Trust with integrity and sound governance.

It’s free to submit work to takahē and free to read it online, and keeping it this way is important to our kaupapa of supporting and uplifting new and established creatives, and ensuring their work reaches as many people as possible.

takahē magazine is a treasure. It’s Aotearoa’s oldest independent literary arts magazine, free from influence of any university or press. takahē has been in continuous publication since 1989 and some of Aotearoa’s brightest creative stars first had work published in our pages. Our heartfelt aim to keep it strong and ensure it flourishes even further. Now more than ever, the role of the arts is a crucial way for us to explore and express the complex and sometimes confronting world we share. With your help, we believe there are many more wonderful issues of takahē to be published in the future!
